Margarette's Feast
Margarette’s Feast is a dark comedy reminiscent of the black and white silent films of the 1920s. Set in southern Brazil, it is a modern twist to the silent film genre, complete with fast-paced editing techniques and a superb Brazilian soundtrack written by the film’s star, Hique Gomez.
Pedro’s dream is to give an extravagant birthday party for his wife, Margarette. He ignores the countless obstacles in his way: the fact that their modest home is miles away from the city, the recent news that he has been laid off, and the problem of obtaining his unemployment money. As Pedro moves between reality and fantasy, he encounters the contradictions of daily life in Brazil -- extreme wealth, poverty, corruption, violence, homelessness, hope, and joy. Pedro’s captivating fantasy ends in a feast for Margarette.
Filmed completely without dialogue, Margarette’s Feast is a portrait of the aspirations and disillusionment of an ordinary person looking for excitement in his life. With funny and bizarre Brazilian characters, it is a film where the edges of realism and surrealism meet, coexist, and blur together to create Pedro’s life, as he experiences it.
