Layers, Symbols & Masks: Recent Work by Keith Kovach
Keith Kovach is attracted to the single print—the individual, unique image—whether it is a digital work, a relief or an oil painting. His work is process driven and he is interested in innovative aesthetic applications for technology that are not specifically intended for art making. Kovach asks the viewer to contend with notions of struggle and transition in work that depict moments of irreversible transformations. Often these changes are violently imposed upon the images of the human body, and the viewer must put aside complex feelings of discomfort to reflect upon the underlying challenges of Kovach's representation. Kovach’s works are visual meditations on structure and process and present a cultural critique on the development of individuality.
Kovach, born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1962, received his B.A. (1984) and M.F.A. (1986) in Photography from the University of South Florida in Tampa. For over ten years, Kovach worked as a freelance artist specializing in multimedia development, animation and commercial photography. From 1999 to 2004, Kovach taught at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Kovach currently is an Assistant Professor of Art and Coordinator of Art Animation in the Art Department at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Kovach was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Media Studies (2004) in which he did collaborative research and lectured at the National University of Fine Arts, Bucharest, Romania.
This exhibition is part of the OMA’s new program, New Work: A Series of Monthly Exhibitions of Contemporary Art. This ongoing monthly exhibition series features new work by contemporary artists from Florida and around the country, emphasizing work that explores new media, installations and collaborative projects.
