Picturing My Florida
Picturing My Florida: A Grassroots Portrait of the Sunshine State
Official Contest Rules
Picturing My Florida: A Grassroots Portrait of the Sunshine State is a companion exhibition to Reflections: Paintings of Florida 1865-1965 from the Collection of Cici and Hyatt Brown Collection. Reflections presents historic paintings that depict Florida as a land of unspoiled beauty and quaint small town life. In contrast, Picturing My Florida is intended to explore the transformed visual environment of Florida today. The theme of the exhibition is a grassroots look at Florida as people see it in their everyday lives. Subject matter might include the hustle and bustle of Florida's cities and attractions, portraits of hometowns and neighborhoods or scenes of the state’s natural environment and rural life.
The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) invites you to participate in the Picturing My Florida photo contest. The photo contest will begin as an online exhibition of photographs open to public participation via Facebook. The virtual exhibition will conclude with a gallery exhibition of photographs at the OMA that includes both the most popular selections as determined by the community and the Curator's Choice Selections that will be selected by a panel of OMA staff and advisors.
A statewide call for entries will begin December 1, 2011 through January 31, 2012. All participants will be given an opportunity to submit their photographs that fit within the theme of Picturing My Florida as described above. All entries will be screened by a panel of OMA staff and advisors to ensure images are thematically appropriate. Screened entries will then be uploaded to the OMA's Facebook page on February 1, 2012 where it will be made available for public viewing as an online gallery through February 29, 2012. Over the course of the online exhibition viewers will be able to use Facebook’s “like” button to vote for their favorite photographs. Winners of the photo contest will have an opportunity to display their photographs in the OMA gallery exhibition, which will be on view April 21 – July 15, 2012 in conjunction with Reflections.
